Innovation in Stormwater Management
- StormTunnel is the latest innovation in stormwater management utilizing state-of-the-art tunneling technology
- StormTunnel eliminates the extensive surface work in the public ROW associated with conventional drywells at multiple sites
- Instead, StorTunnel streamlines and connects all project drywells along a single alignment under the public ROW
- StromTunnel eliminates land aquisition, open excavation and park closures associated with Infiltration Galleries
- Instead, StormTunnel uses underground tunnels that minimize public impact
- StormTunnel provides detention and connectivity for embedded drywells
- Diverted stormwater is pretreated and discharged into StormTunnel for deep infiltration to replenish groundwater
- Drywells can be fitted with risers to provide retention storage for conservation as well as for silt deposition (where needed)
- Diverted stormwater is retained up to riser level
- Excess water above riser level is detained and infiltrated
- Retained water is extracted from sumps inside StormTunnel for local use or disposal of silt deposits
- For soils with high permeability, a StormTunnel with perforated lower perimeter may be used instead of drywells
- Diverted and pretreated stormwater is detained within the tunnel and gradually infiltrated into the local formation
ABOUT
Climate change is mandating the large-scale capture and conservation of urban stormwater runoff using Best Management Practices (BMPs). Construction of conventional Detention-Infiltration Galleries requires large plots of open land, which are hard to find in urban settings. The extensive open excavation and massive earth moving activities for these facilities causes significant disruption, while their construction and operation has a huge carbon footprint. Drywells have no detention capability and provide limited infiltration capacity requiring clusters of adequately spaced units connected with surface excavated piping, limiting their practicality and causing significant impact during construction. Both BMPs typically require pumping at diversion.
StormTunnel - Stormwater Capture Technology
StormTunnel combines the storage capacity of bored tunnels with infiltration capability of drywells to deliver an entirely new Detention-Infiltration-Retention BMP with no land constraints. It capitalizes on recent advances and innovations in tunneling, which have made it a viable alternative for urban infrastructure. StormTunnel is bored under public streets and parks, below existing utilities, where land availability is no issue. The tunneling eliminates the public impact of surface construction and minimizes the earthwork. StormTunnel does not need diversion pumping since it is below the storm drain and can eliminate the need for pretreatment by providing internal retention space for sediment deposition before water reaches the infiltration drywell inlets, which are equipped with filter fabric that protect the drywells from any remaining suspended solids.
StormTunnel is the only truly universal solution capable of meeting the enormous challenges of sustainable urban stormwater management that our congested cities need today.
